Oasis

Oasis’s journey into flow arts began at a “family party” underground rave in San Francisco, where she was first introduced to poi among acrobatics and LED alien posters. At an Ojai Pirate Festival in 2008, she watched a fan duet where two women tossed their fans high into the air, opening her eyes to the possibilities of partner dancing.

Her own journey with fire took root later in the San Diego desert, where spinning beneath vast skies created a lasting connection between movement and nature. While she began fire spinning as a solo practice, the duets she had witnessed offered a contrast, showing her how flow could also become a way to build relationships, trust, and art.

Going into a spin, everything for Oasis turns off, and she connects to her higher self, trusting the safety, the motions, and the emotions built up within to spill out through the dance. She becomes part of the motion, where everything feels okay.

She draws inspiration from music by artists like Ahee, Of the Trees, Bob Marley, and Sublime.

During those original nights spinning fire at Moontribe, the skies were vast with stars and the Milky Way. Oasis would hike up the desert’s rocky hills, looking down at the fire flow artists. She thought they were dancing for extraterrestrials, a way to communicate with the cosmos.

Later, in Humboldt County, Pyrophytic Roots, a Burning Man Conclave, came together, and she found her fire tribe.

In 2025, when Jem and Oasis created the idea of Spellbound, their vision was to create a community where all diversities are accepted, people are held accountable for their actions, and everyone is encouraged to collaborate, building personal relationships both within and outside of the troupe.

Today, she serves as a bridge between worlds, inviting others to feel, dream, and ignite their own forms of self-expression.

“My inspiration is driven by dynamic interactions and self-expression. In a flow state, I dance to connect with my relationship to Mother Earth and the cosmos, becoming a personal form of communication. Sharing that connection with my community creates pure bliss.”

Jem

Jem is a flow artist who began practicing flow arts in 2019. After a friend introduced her to flow arts, she quickly became entranced by the element of fire. While photographing local Humboldt County performers for an art project in 2022, she was inspired to begin her own fire performance career. In 2025, Jem co-founded Spellbound with Oasis.

Jem first fell in love with contact staff and has since learned a wide range of props. Flow arts became a healing practice and form of meditation for her. Through her performances, she dances to music that embodies the rhythm of her soul while bringing theatrical stories and characters to the stage through captivating movement, stage presence, props, and sets.

“I love being in my flow state. Nothing else really matters. It’s complete bliss.”

Jem wants to mesmerize her audience and draw them into her universe through transmutation: “You chemically combust something and move with it.” Her performances create a lucid, immersive experience, connecting with audiences through sultry and playful movement and interaction.

Michael ‘Aksel the Fire-Tammer’– Stage Manager/ Fire Safety Supervisor

Aksel

Aksel is a seasoned and passionate voice in the world of fire arts, having begun his spinning journey in 2024. His love of flame runs deep, tracing back to childhood curiosity and reignited by a memory of awe: witnessing his first fire performance at the 2008 Redding Renaissance Fair. 

Drawn to staff flow through his background in martial arts, Aksel blends muscle memory with a growing spiritual devotion. He follows fire deities like Brigid and Surtr, grounding his practice in reverence as much as motion.

Aksel is relentless in his pursuit. He’s hungry to master every prop he encounters—from dragon staff and contact staff to swords and fire fins. His practice is fueled by community and his desire to stay connected, breaking the tendency to self-isolate. 

Through time spent with the Humboldt Circus and Circus Emporium, he has been greatly influenced by sideshow and circus performances. This has brought peace, meditation, and resilience into his daily practice. 

Michael’s philosophy is simple yet profound: there’s no wrong way to spin, as long as it’s safe.

Starlight

Starlight is an expressive dancer from Florida who brings a fusion of hip-hop, belly dance, ballet, and acrobatics to her fire performance. She flows with staff, fans, palm torches, and fire bubbles, incorporating full-body movement and powerful inversions. Inspired by her community, she discovered her flow state through fire spinning and continues to grow her artistry with bravery and dedication. Her goal is to cultivate a one-of-a-kind style that pushes the boundaries of creative expression.

She also shares her passion by teaching partner acrobatics and kids’ flow, encouraging others to find confidence and joy through movement.

“Bravery is not the absence of fear. It is the presence of fear and the determination to move on.”

Zephyr Flowheart

Zephyr is a flow artist ignited by the winds and flames of Humboldt County. Spinning fire since 2022, Zephyr’s journey began with a ceremonial initiation by local fire dancers on the sands of Moonstone Beach. From those first handmade props—colorful ribbons and winter wands—to the vibrant fire circles of San Diego and Los Angeles, zir path has been one of transformation and light.

Drawing deeply from the disciplines of belly dance and martial arts, Zephyr’s movement channels the wild energy of the Sagittarian flame—untamed, precise, and luminous. A non-binary performer and costuming visionary, Zephyr uses fire dance as a canvas to explore gender-fluid presentation and inspire others to live authentically. Zir performances evoke a fierce grace, full of life-affirming power and gentle defiance. Pride festivals, music gatherings, and county fairs have all been stages where Zephyr’s message takes form: Never let fear rule your fate. For zir, spinning feels like nature itself—cyclical, expansive, and timeless. A beacon in the dark, Zephyr seeks to remind zir community of its radiant strength.

Zie would like to integrate flow arts with theater to create and inspire somatically embodied narratives. Zie hopes to inspire all who connect to zir flow art to fearlessly create and write their own story. 

“Who is Zephyr? A spirit from another time, an angel in modern terms, here to ignite kindness, courage, and creativity through fire.”

Connor Rad

Connor is a nonbinary flow artist from Los Angeles. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Marine Science from Monterey and came to NorCal to pursue a Master’s degree. His first experience with fire flow was at Titlow Hill at Eclectic Farms, where he was mesmerized by Zephyr’s staff performance. Later, he interacted with Spellbound and introduced himself. He found openness and a willingness to give the space to experiment without judgment, describing it as warm and welcoming. Before getting into spinning, he tried fire breathing with a friend. Then he was encouraged to learn to flow before furthering fire-breathing techniques. From there, he picked up fire-fans. 

“Fire spinning anad flow have been a way for me to gain confidence in myself, to dance, and have fun. It has been a way to get outside of my anxiety.”

Simon

A Humboldt County local, Simon began his flow journey in 2021 by teaching himself one of the most complex props he could demystify. What started as a personal challenge quickly became a passion. When he drops into flow state, the outside world quiets — replaced by a focused excitement that pulls him fully into the present moment.

Deeply influenced by the creativity of the Humboldt flow community, Simon pushes his craft through dedicated self-practice. His pursuit of mastery has led him to the stage where he explores flower patterns, hand twists, and contact-style movement.

Simon finds the flow community wholesome, supportive, and inspiring. He’s grateful for the space to express his creativity and to continue evolving through every spin.
